Watching
Nov. 30-Dec. 6: Matthew 24:36-44
This passage from Matthew isn’t meant to scare us. It’s an invitation to live with steady, faithful readiness. Instead of bracing for a “thief God,” we’re called to open ourselves to spiritual disciplines that keep us close to Christ, like prayer and scripture reading. Jesus is reminding us that what matters most isn’t status or success, but a heart prepared through everyday discipleship, choosing, like Noah, to respond with trust in God’s way, even when life feels uncertain.
There are 5 days of devotions each week to recognize that you might have other commitments, or maybe you are like me and miss now and again. Download a printable version
Day 1: Watchfulness Without Fear
Scripture: Matthew 24:36
Reflection: Jesus’ call to “watch” is not about panic or dread, it’s about trust. Fear-driven faith exhausts us; grace-driven watchfulness steadies us.
Prayer: Lord, help me to watch with hope, not fear. Teach me to trust Your timing.
Action: Write down one fear you have about the future. Pray over it and release it to Jesus.
Journaling Prompts:
What fears about the future weigh on me the most?
How might trusting God’s timing change my perspective today?
Day 2: Readiness Over Status
Scripture: Matthew 24:37–41
Reflection: Readiness, not wealth or success, marks true discipleship. Our culture applauds achievement, but God desires faithfulness.
Prayer: Lord, keep me focused on inward readiness, not outward appearances.
Action: Examine your priorities today. Where are you chasing status instead of spiritual depth?
Journaling Prompt:
Where do I feel pressure to “measure up” in worldly terms?
What would it look like to prioritize spiritual readiness over status?
Day 3: Daily Steps Toward Holiness
Scripture: Matthew 24:42
Reflection: Watchfulness is steady, daily growth. Like healthy habits, spiritual practices shape us over time.
Prayer: Lord, give me grace for small, faithful steps today.
Action: Reflect on where you saw God today and where you need His help.
Journaling Prompt:
Where did I notice God’s presence today?
What small step can I take tomorrow toward holiness?
Day 4: God as the Unexpected Guest
Scripture: Matthew 24:43
Reflection: Jesus compares His return to a thief, not to scare us, but to highlight the importance of attentiveness. Are we living as if Jesus could return at any moment?
Prayer: Lord, make me alert to Your presence today.
Action: Pause three times today to ask: “Where is Jesus at work right now?”
Journaling Prompt:
How would my choices change if I truly expected Jesus’ presence today?
Where did I sense Jesus’ activity in my life or world?
Day 5: Hopeful Anticipation
Scripture: Matthew 24:44
Reflection: Advent is about waiting with hope. Watching faithfully means leaning into God’s promises, not withdrawing or freezing in fear.
Prayer: Lord, as I wait, fill me with hope and courage.
Action: Thank God for one way you see His hope breaking into the world with a friend or family member.
Journaling Prompt:
What promises of God give me hope right now?
How can I share that hope with someone today?
